General Biology Exam Strategy (Taiwan Comp. Univ.)

1.The Taiwan Comprehensive University transfer exam for general biology has varied format year to year. In year one fourteen, it was fifty multiple-choice questions, each worth two points. In year one thirteen, it was ten multiple choice plus ten essay questions. The exam is entirely in English — you need to know both the biology and the English terminology.

2.Based on three years of past papers, the most tested topics are: animal physiology — fourteen questions, about seventeen percent. Cell biology — twelve questions, fourteen percent. Plant biology and biochemistry tied at nine questions each, eleven percent. Ecology, animal diversity, and molecular biology each around ten percent. Evolution eight percent. Biotechnology seven percent. Microbiology five percent. Genetics four percent.

3.Your physical therapy background gives you a huge advantage in animal physiology. In year one fourteen, eleven out of fifty questions were on animal physiology — kidney filtration, blood vessel oxygenation, vaccination antibodies, hippocampus and memory, SA node cardiac rhythm, medulla oblongata, insulin. You already understand these concepts. Your only job is to map them to the English terminology. These eleven questions should be your guaranteed points.

4.Your biggest gaps are plant biology and ecology — together they account for roughly thirteen to seventeen questions per year. Plant topics include light reactions, Calvin cycle, xylem and phloem, stomata, plant hormones like auxin and gibberellin. Ecology topics include trophic levels, net primary productivity, carrying capacity, r/K selection, succession. These are the areas where you need to spend the most study time.

5.Two essay topics together worth thirty-five points: CRISPR and RNA interference in personalized medicine, worth twenty points in year one thirteen. And the Hardy-Weinberg equation with its application, worth fifteen points. If you can write these two in English with correct mechanisms and calculations, you secure a huge portion of the essay score.

6.Other essay topics seen: competitive versus noncompetitive versus allosteric enzyme inhibition, worth six points. Amino acids as neurotransmitters — glutamate, GABA — four points. Cytochrome c in apoptosis — four points. Genetically modified plants and transgene escape prevention — fifteen points.

7.Recommended study order based on exam frequency weighted by your weakness: first, cell biology — four to five questions per year, you are rusty. Second, molecular biology plus biotechnology — five to seven questions, DNA replication, transcription, translation, CRISPR, PCR. Third, genetics — two to three questions, focus on Hardy-Weinberg and X-linked. Fourth, biochemistry and metabolism — enzyme kinetics, glycolysis, TCA, electron transport chain. Fifth, plant biology — five to six questions, your weakest area. Sixth, animal physiology — English terminology drill only. Seventh, ecology. Eighth, evolution and classification.
